How to Keep Your Wedding Costs Under Control

As a marriage celebrant, I’ve hosted many weddings from small, intimate home ceremonies, to large gatherings in hotel ballrooms. Whatever style of wedding you go for, what matters most is the experience you create on the day, for yourself and your guests, as they support you in your commitment. And in doing so, you’ll naturally want to keep your costs under control.

Let’s have a look at some of the key areas, so you don’t have thoughts of that wedding cost hanging over you on the big day.

• Buy your wedding dress in advance to avoid paying the fees associated with a late and speedy delivery.

• Embrace minimalist floral displays. Create beauty with the artful use of colour and simplicity rather than trying to present a wide range of elaborate bouquets.

• Replace expensive table linens with runners and/or a nice floral display.

• Serve mid-range basics rather than top-shelf liquor.

• Work with your videographer and photographer to cut out unnecessary extras and minimise your costs. This may include having one videographer on the day instead of two, not using a drone, and avoiding needing to receive RAW footage or shots.

• Book a standard-sized invitation and send one per couple or family, rather than one for every individual guest.

• Reduce your guest list to those who you really want to be there and can fit comfortably into the venue you’re targeting.

• Try to find a venue that can accommodate your main ceremony, reception and photos.

• Book your venue during the off-peak season (winter) or on weekdays if you can make it work for you and your guests.

None of the above reduces the delight you create for yourself or your guests on the day. But it will leave more money in your pocket to allow you and your partner to invest in what matters. Perhaps it’s the honeymoon or a deposit on a new house.
